Legislation & Employment

Legislation

Gender Recognition Act 2004

The Gender Recognition Act is the main legislation in the United Kingdom that allows adults to change their gender legally; it deals with the procedure for applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate and the legal process.

Equality Act 2010

The Equalities Act replaced previous acts to prevent discrimination in the workplace and wider community based on nine protected characteristics:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex, and
  • sexual orientation.
The act also redefined the meaning of gender reassignment so that there was no requirement for medical intervention.
